Kirk Whalum

I had an extraordinary live music experience seeing Kirk Whalum's  uncle, Hugh "Peanuts" Whalum, who played with Count Basie, Nat King Cole and  Ella Fitzgerald.  Rendezvous  signed Peanuts, who plays genius sax and piano, and he has a voice like velvet. His set,  was so amazing that everyone in the room seemed to sigh collectively and say quietly after each song "oh, yeah" or "beautiful." Indeed, it was exquisite and heartbreakingly beautiful. "

Hugh "Peanuts" Whalum

As cool and smooth as the perfect martini, Hugh "Peanuts" Whalum has provided sophisticated musical entertainment for several generations of St. Louisans, starting in Gaslight Square and continuing into the present day. A fine tenor saxophonist as well as a pianist and singer, Whalum somehow manages to be both suave and down-home, charming audiences even as he educates them in the finer points of jazz and the Great American Songbook. Recently signed to the internationally distributed Rendezvous Music label, Whalum is getting a well-deserved late-career chance to reach a wider audience. We can only hope his future success won't preclude frequent appearances in the cozy confines of local spots like Brandt's Red Carpet Lounge, where Whalum has held forth most Thursdays for the past several years.

Back from a week in Paris (March 7-14) playing with Anthony Stelmaszack (guitar), Thibaut Chopin (upright bass & harmonica) & Simon "Shuffle" Boyer (drums)...a gig at the One Way (one of the few existing blues clubs in Paris) preceded four nights at the legendary Caveau de la Huchette (located around the corner from the Notre Dame)...this warmed us up for two days of recording, successfully completing my upcoming CD release...I couldn't be more excited!! Harmonica virtuoso Sandy Weltman's talents are diverse to say the least. While at home in the jazz realm, he is equally skilled in blues, Celtic, Klezmer, Latin and much more.  He has  gained international recognition in the World Harmonica Competitions. Sandy has won numerous awards and is equally skilled on the banjo, with which he fronted his own band called the SanDroids (see cd entitled "Escape Velocity").

Every band Sandy Weltman touches turns to gold!  come hear his newest musical adventure...Gypsy Jazz!  Think the gypsy jazz stylings of Django Rheinhardt!
After the party these guys made happen, you know they'll be back!

Dub Kitchen!
"Dub Kitchen remains an elusive presence in St. Louis, rarely playing out and offering only a perfunctory bio on their Web site. But make no mistake: This is dub reggae as played by a handful of white twentysomethings who — praise Jah — don't pretend to come from funky Kingston. The alternating male and female vocals come and go in a sweet, unassuming fashion, but this band's core is their rhythm section. Stuttering organ chords, rumbling bass lines and sharp snare hits fall into the cavern of echoing ephemera. The members of Dub Kitchen are proud students of '70s dub, and they keep the pot simmering at the perfect temperature." -Riverfront Times-Music Awards -2006 Nomination

Coming Soon  Mary Dyson

with

on keyboard

Mary Dyson is a presence on stage to be reckoned with.  From the moment she takes the microphone she captivates her audience and holds them until the last note.  Whether it's the saucy tilt of her signature fedora, the way she looks her audience in their eyes or the clear, sweet notes she sings...she's hard to ignore once she's taken stage; dinner forks stop in midair, conversations cease in mid-sentence.  Her renderings of the Great American Songbook make old melodies new again...and she doesn't stop there...from blues to R & B, jazz standards to jazzy pop her range and repertoire are impressive and completely entertaining.

A couple of months ago, StLJN had a brief item about longtime St. Louis mainstay Hugh "Peanuts" Whalum signing with Rendezvous Music, the company owned by saxophonist Dave Koz that already included Whalum's nephew, smooth jazz saxophonist Kirk Whalum, on its roster of artists.

Now we've found out a bit more about Rendezvous' plans for the elder Whalum,  Rendezvous has reissued Whalum's eponymous 2001 CD, originally recorded for Top Drawer, a small custom label established by Kirk Whalum prior to his signing with Rendezvous. Hugh "Peanuts" Whalum, the CD, will get new cover artwork and will receive nationwide distribution under the combined imprint of Rendezvous/Top Drawer.

It'll be interesting to see how Rendezvous markets the Whalum CD, as it is very much a straight ahead jazz recording, rather than one in the smooth jazz that has been the label's meat and potatoes. Based on a couple of listens, I can see the material and production style appealing to fans of both Cole brothers - Nat "King" and Freddy, that is - as well as to those who enjoy the saloon song stylings of Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. The production by Kirk Whalum is nicely understated, showing off his uncle's talents as vocalist, pianist and saxophonist in a program of swing, standards and ballads.

Of course, people in St. Louis know what a fine musician and singer "Peanuts" is, but in today's highly fragmented and youth-obsessed music marketplace, how does a record company break a "new" artist who's been in the music business for a half-century already? It's a challenge, to be sure, but there's no doubt Hugh Whalum deserves a wider audience, and perhaps now he'll get it. For now, he can still be heard most Thursday nights at Brandt's in University City, and will also make a guest appearance at the Rendezvous All-Stars show at the Pageant.
