Kirk Whalum

I also had an extraordinary live music experience seeing Kirk Whalum's 77-year-old uncle (and/or godfather?), Hugh "Peanuts" Whalum, who played with Count Basie, Nat King Cole and Ella Fitzgerald, but never made a record. Rendezvous learned about him from Kirk and signed Peanuts, who plays genius sax and piano, and he has a voice like velvet. His set, backed by Kirk and several other great musicians, was so amazing that everyone in the room seemed to sigh collectively and say quietly after each song "oh, yeah" or "beautiful." Indeed, it was exquisite and heartbreakingly beautiful. A friend, a recovering rocker who I personally turned on to jazz about a year ago, accompanied me. Afterward, my friend said, "That's one of the best things I've ever heard. Am I on heroin?" I answered, "No, man. That was Jimi Hendrix, except jazz."

I was fortunate to hear a selection from the CD on our local Jazz Station and then get directions from the DJ on where to purchase Coming Together. Had I not, I would have missed a wonderful experience! What great range, outstanding feeling, and superb talent. Great recording!

 EXCITING PIANO AND RHYTHMS
Reviewer: JOHN
I love this CD. The group is tight and swinging. Jeter Thompson’s inventive and tasteful piano work shines throughout. At the keyboards he got different sounds, electric piano, vibes, even jazz organ The material (originals only) is varied: hard swinging jazz (Funkarama, Look at me), ballads (The last return, Tender-hearted), bossa nova / latin (Brazilian rainbow, Gwenlanny), funk (Plink). “Alone” which lasts 11 minutes is a standout. There is also an updated version of “Kilimanjaro” the Quartette Trés Bien unforgettable classic. The soulful “It’s the way I think of you” reminds me of Paul Mitchell another great (and underrated) pianist.

Thurs. Dec 28 SPECIAL GUEST ARTIST

Michael Kelsey
Kelsey pounds, pings, stings, pops, and pulls music out of every part of his instrument or anything else an arm's length or foot kick away in a funky, rhythmic style he calls progressive/aggressive acoustic guitar. Guitar wizard/singer songwriter/performance artist/entertainer all in a one-man-band package, Kelsey performs music for the eyes and ears.

A native of Lafayette, Indiana, Michael Kelsey cut his musical teeth on electric lead and bass guitars in a variety of cover bands from progressive jazz to rock. He spent five years as a recording engineer and arranger in his own studio before closing it to pursue his solo career. After placing as a finalist in a Guitar Player Magazine's national competition, he switched from electric to acoustic guitar to take advantage of the broader variety of sounds, moods and nuances available from this instrument that could increase the dimensions of his music.
Michael has toured nationally as the opening act for Blind Melon and Dishwalla. He has opened shows for such notables as Adrian Legg, Tim Reynolds, Cowboy Junkies, The Bodeans and John Wesley Harding.
After performing an opening set for folk artist David Wilcox, David described Kelsey's show as 'Cirque Du Soleil' on acoustic guitar."

Peanuts Whalum
  St. Louis
Jazz Notes
(June 27th, 2006)

by Dean Minderman (St. Louis Jazz Notes)
  » view website

A couple of months ago, StLJN had a brief item about longtime St. Louis mainstay Hugh "Peanuts" Whalum signing with Rendezvous Music, the company owned by saxophonist Dave Koz that already included Whalum's nephew, smooth jazz saxophonist Kirk Whalum, on its roster of artists.

Now we've found out a bit more about Rendezvous' plans for the elder Whalum, courtesy of Cheryl Hughey, who's handling publicity for the Rendezvous All-Stars appearance at the Pageant next month. Later this year, Rendezvous will reissue Whalum's eponymous 2001 CD, originally recorded for Top Drawer, a small custom label established by Kirk Whalum prior to his signing with Rendezvous. Hugh "Peanuts" Whalum, the CD, will get new cover artwork and will receive nationwide distribution under the combined imprint of Rendezvous/Top Drawer.

It'll be interesting to see how Rendezvous markets the Whalum CD, as it is very much a straightahead jazz recording, rather than one in the smooth jazz that has been the label's meat and potatoes. Based on a couple of listens, I can see the material and production style appealing to fans of both Cole brothers - Nat "King" and Freddy, that is - as well as to those who enjoy the saloon song stylings of Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. The production by Kirk Whalum is nicely understated, showing off his uncle's talents as vocalist, pianist and saxophonist in a program of swing, standards and ballads.

Of course, people in St. Louis know what a fine musician and singer "Peanuts" is, but in today's highly fragmented and youth-obsessed music marketplace, how does a record company break a "new" artist who's been in the music business for a half-century already? It's a challenge, to be sure, but there's no doubt Hugh Whalum deserves a wider audience, and perhaps now he'll get it. For now, he can still be heard most Thursday nights at Brandt's in University City, and will also make a guest appearance at the Rendezvous All-Stars show at the Pageant.

Trevor combines the phrasing and delivery of Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. She has the verve, brightness, and range that characterized Fitzgerald, but also calls upon the phrasing, ornamentation, and melodic variation that was so uniquely Holiday's. She is comfortable with all types of tunes and at ease in any tempo. "Early in the Morning" is as swinging blues as you're going to hear and "What a Difference a Day Made" would make the Queen herself, Dinah Washington, sit up and take notice. She transforms the bop anthem "Work Song" into a RB, story of a chain gang convict pounding rocks into dust. Old tent revival gospel preaching and signifying is captured in the traditional "Give Me Jesus."
